Send a patriotic bouquet to honor a veteran

Veterans Day falls on November 11, the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. Patriotic wreaths are a perfect way to honor a veteran who sacrificed their life for their country. Each year on November 11th at precisely 11:00 a.m. a floral wreath is laid at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery.

Because it is a federal holiday, many American people have the day off from school or work and attend observances throughout the country. From stirring parades and ceremonies to military exhibits and tributes to distinguished veterans. It is also celebrated as Armistice Day, Remembrance Day or Poppy Day in other parts of the world.

Patriotic red, white and blue veterans tributes

Red and white flowers are in abundance in nature, but there are few "true blue" flowering plants. So in some of our patriotic bouquets the "blue" is actually light blue or purple flowers paired with a navy blue vase.

Why are red poppies are worn on Remberance Day?

The poppy has become a nationally known and recognized symbol of sacrifice and is worn to honor the men and women who served and died for their country in all wars. In the World War I battlefields of Belgium, poppies grew wild amid the ravaged landscape. How could such a pretty little flower grow wild while surrounded by death and destruction? The overturned soils of battle enabled the poppy seeds to be covered, thus allowing them to grow and to forever serve as a reminder of the bloodshed during that and future wars.

Poppies have long been used as a symbol of both sleep and death: sleep because of the opium extracted from them, and death because of their blood-red color.

World War I officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. Close
